Phobia therapy in Swindon and Cirencester
A Phobia is an irrational Fear, something that is not necessarily feared by all and often something that others find hard to imagine. We all have things we don't particularly like and we manage this by avoiding those things and this works well for some people. But avoidence actually increases our Phobic response the next time we are triggered.
Sometimes the fear creates a state of panic and upset that is unbearable to the sufferer. For example when someone who is scared of Spiders sees one running across their carpet, its as though a monster has invaded their house and they have to get away from it at all costs. Even when the threat of the Spider has gone, their mind continues to be on high alert just in case it has a friend around the back of the sofa.
This is when it can make life uncomfortable.
When we are born, we have no Phobias and the only fears we have are that of loud noises and heights. A baby needs to learn what is safe and what isn't, it does this by watching and copying its parents. So if a parent's reaction to a little spider is to scream, panic and run out of the room, this behaviour will be recorded by the baby's brain and it will potentally become the pattern of behavoiur that it will adopt in life, passing this down the line with each new generation.
Luckily Phobias are learnt, which means that they can also be unlearnt using the correct procedures and techniques. All of which are done in a relaxing and non judgemental way. No exposure to the fear or Phobia is nessesary which makes it perfect for those with extreme panic reactions.
